The term sustainability has been around since the mid-80\u2019s, thanks to the\u00a0Brundlandt\u00a0report, published by the United Nations\u2019 now defunct World Commission on Environment and Development. In it, sustainability is described in much the same way we know it today:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDevelopment that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0<\/span>sustainable living<\/span><\/a>\u00a0means being careful of our everyday actions, being aware that some resources are not infinite and that we need to protect what we have left of the Earth.\u00a0<\/span>And the support for this type of living is growing, with an increasing number of people and organizations committing themselves to more sustainable living.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs created the\u00a0<\/span>Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a>: a set of 17 goals which list problems where considerable work is needed, according to all member states of the United Nations, to find solutions. Also known as the \u201cSDGs,\u201d these 17 goals deal with\u00a0a number of\u00a0topics, ranging from issues of warfare, to achieving gender equality and the need to reduce pollution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow are my actions affecting the future?\u00a0Am I really creating irreparable damage\u00a0that future generations will have to deal with?\u00a0What can I do to change things around me?\u201d These are all questions that you might end up asking yourself after getting familiar with the SDGs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All over the world, sustainable living\u00a0is being embraced by people and corporations.\u00a0Are you familiar with\u00a0<\/span>the movement to ban plastic straws<\/span><\/a>? Sustainable living means\u00a0building\u00a0more of\u00a0those\u00a0movements, using less energy, creating less waste, travelling more consciously, changing our shopping\u00a0habits\u00a0and holding corporations and governments accountable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
